The Parkinson’s Research and Education Foundation (PREF) Is a 501(3)c not-for-profit charitable organization (TIN # 20-0888895). Our mission is to support research initiatives, educational programs, supportive services, and community outreach for Parkinson’s disease patients and their caregivers. The mission of PREF differs from those of other foundations that serve the Parkinson’s community. PREF is committed to promoting a collaborative effort between centers, researchers, and clinicians at geographically distinct sites through an internet based research infrastructure, forming a consortium “center without walls.” Specifically, PREF provides support for a major epidemiological multi-center longitudinal research database initiative at associated Parkinson’s centers. projectSUNSHINE tracks extensive demographic and clinical information, captured in real time at every patient encounter, including scales (UPDRS, Hoehn-Yahr, Gilman criteria, MMSE, Epworth, Schwab ADL, PDQ, AIMS/Dyskinesia), medications (i.e. dose, response, tolerability), motor fluctuations (i.e. onset, duration, severity), concomitant medical history (i.e. symptoms, illnesses, medications), and epidemiology (i.e. relatives, occupation, trauma, caffeine, tobacco, toxins). PREF also fills unmet vital needs by providing educational, wellness, and supportive activities that are crucial to help patients, caregivers, and family members cope with the challenges that are encountered from diagnosis through long-term treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Ongoing activities include: patient and caregiver support groups, educational lectures and symposiums, and physical therapy classes.
